Brick #8

230 x 290 mm, 232 pages. London, UK

In an interview with It's Nice That given around the time of the launch of issue one of Brick, founder and creative director Hayley Louisa Brown explained why she wanted to create a hip-hop publication that physically embodied a punk zine:

‘It just made perfect sense to me because I see so many parallels between the two. I mean, I could talk all day about it, but the political nature of the lyrics in both genres for starters; what’s the difference between the countless Kennedy-isms within the American hardcore scene of the early 80s and Kendrick Lamar’s repetitive distaste for Ronald Reagan?’

On the Journal:
‘This music magazine’s recent redesign sought to prove just how seriously they intend to represent the ‘new-age hip-hop’ culture. Catalogue Studio set themselves the task of ‘flipping it on it’s head’. Now dominated by white space and bold inky type, the new feel establishes a notable contrast to their competitors.’ From Coverage: April 2017.
